ABC reported that a large scale bauxite mine expansion on Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland is a step closer with the release of a new environmental impact statement.

Public feedback for the proposed USD 1.5 billion South of Embley Project near Weipa will close on December 19th 2012.

Mr Pat Fiore Rio Tinto Alcan spokesman said that it meets the Federal Government's requirement to include the impact of shipping on the Great Barrier Reef. The extra ships are actually going north to Asia, they are not travelling through the reef at all. We've gone through the details of all that in this new submission. We've also explained in even more detail what we've been doing for 45, 50 years already, how we ship through the reef.

Mr Fiore said that as well as addressing concerns about shipping through the reef, the EIS addresses the impact on a recently discovered crab species. The great thing about this process is we actually discovered the species, so we're happy to report on it and we're happy to explain how we go about making sure none of our activities have an impact on the species. What's interesting also is that we found that same species in areas where we've been running, operating for 45 years, so showing that what we actually do works.
